3D Rendering: Marketing for a Luxury Beach Resort in Maldives: Case Study

3D Rendering: Marketing for a Luxury Beach Resort in Maldives: Case Study

One of our precious clients from the Republic of Maldives, Anantara Hotels, Resorts and Spas keeps in bringing the world exciting seaside resorts and clubs. They never stop pursuing the natural power of building places for people to escape, revel or play. This time, they brought us another wonder world in Veligandu Huraa, Republic of Maldives, a beach resort to embrace the extraordinary.
For the past two years, we’ve been helping Anantara to build the unbuilt with our powerful 3D renderings for their marketing. Today, we’d like to share the 3D rendering process of this project. Check it out!

Anantara Veli Maldives Resort

Situated on a beautiful island fringed by a turquoise lagoon, the Anantara Veli Maldives Resort is a luxury destination. It features 67 villas, 2 restaurants, a bar, a SPA and other entertainment facilities.

The Boduhuraa Island.

To illustrate this wonderland, Giles from Anantara Group planned to have 17 images, namely:

  • Three images per villa, one looking in, one looking out, and one bathroom. There are three villa types: Deluxe Overwater Villa, Deluxe Overwater Pool Villa, and Beach Pool Villa. That’s nine images in total;
  • Two images for the SPA;
  • Two images per restaurant: Origami and 73 Degrees, and that’s four images altogether;
  • Two images for the Dhoni Bar.

Having this super clear scope in mind, let’s get started!

3D Rendering Brief

There is an extreme lovely cooperation pattern between Giles and us. Since we’ve been working together for nearly two years, we are able to understand each other easily and always on track. On the first day we started the project, Giles had sent us a bunch of files regarding this resort.

To help us understand the project more, Gile’s references are detailed and well-organized. As a result, we’ve got:

  • The 3D model and the camera angles needed;
  • Material board;

The exterior material instruction for one of the villas.

  • Floor plans and elevations;

Floor plan for Dhoni Bar.

  • Site photos for a better picture of the place.

The goal of our 3D renderings are crystal clear: to market this travel destination. As a key tool of marketing in hospitality, we’re confident with our 3D visuals winning the battle. What is the 3D rendering process then? How long does it usually take? How should it get started? If you’re looking for working with an ArchViz team for the first time, we believe this blog is a help for getting know the details during production.

3D Rendering Process

The very first thing our 3D artists did was sorting models and setting camera angles. Gile provided 3ds Max models with their custom-tailored furniture. What we did was to fine-tune them and selected some camera angles based on their request and our professional experience. In particular, we provided more views than they asked. This is a good way because our client will have more choices and have more perspectives to see what the project will be presented.

For one of the restaurants, we carefully selected four views for them to choose two out of.

Finally, Gile’s team decided to add more views. When they received our suggested views, they believed that adding the views would be a better way to demonstrate the resort, which in turn would boost the marketing. As a consequence, five more views were added which totaled up to 21 views.

The next stage is to apply textures and materials, and set the lighting. Because we’ve worked with Anantara’s and created seaside resort projects for the past two years, we know clearly their preference for 3D images. Thus, we directly created the rendered and post-produced final drafts.

Gile’s team absolutely loved these renderings, as some of them were set as final images on the spot! There were only a couple of additional comments on parts of the drafts:

  • Change the landscape and vegetation for the two restaurants based on the site photos he just sent. This is for accuracy.
  • Make the color of wood material darker in all interior images.

Our 3D artists made all the requested corrections immediately in 24 hours, and the final images were all set!

Change of Plan

Right after the final delivery, Anantara team came up with a request. They’re hoping to change the design of the bathroom in the Deluxe Overwater Villa. In the new plan, they want to:

  • Replace the glass panels on the left with shower spaces;
  • At the same time, remove the bathtub;
  • Move the towel rack to the rear of the room.

The change was not involved with much workload, so we created the new bathroom view for free within a day.

Previous design vs. new design.

This is not the only project we provide free modification services, although there will occur fees under certain circumstances. When we will charge for modifications? Please refer to our blogs about changing design and fees: Four Typical Scenarios Concerning Extra Charge during the Rendering Process.

Facts about 3D Architectural Animation: Why You Need It

Facts about 3D Architectural Animation: Why You Need It

In this day and age, continuous progress has been made in technology to satisfy our huge demand. What we could only dream about yesterday has translated into reality now. In visual communication, 3D rendering makes it easy for everyone to see what future houses will look like. Images become sharper, livelier and cooler. But compared to all-pervading 3D graphics, 3D animation is much more impressive. It is present in many things we are familiar with such as virtual reality games and the popular Disney movies. People will get a life-like experience and great details from these digital videos. And the entertainment industry is not the only user of 3D animation. It’s also widely applied in the field of architecture where architects use it for various reasons. So to speak, it plays a necessary part in architectural designs.

In this blog, we’re going to reveal something about 3D architectural animation. What is it? What advantages does it have? Who can benefit from it and how? Ready to learn? Let’s go!

What is 3D Architectural Animation?

3D animation for architecture and design is a more innovative way to visualize the projects. Unlike the still images in 3D views, with the help of architecture animations, it can clearly present different aspects of the design in motion. Just like a short movie, what it conveys to the audience is not only highly informative but also fully immersive. In this way, architects and designers can speak with their clients in the visual language, which leads to mutual understanding.

At first in the 1990s, architectural experts employed 3D visualization to design buildings. Due to its high cost, time-consuming process and not so realistic effect, people didn’t use it for marketing at that time. As it developed, nowadays it’s hard for us to tell the difference between 3D-rendered visuals and real photos and videos. Furthermore, the lower price makes its extensive use possible.

The 2010s sees 3D visualization grew into maturity. Many 3D studios have been made a profit by selling 3D services as the times required. Almost every architecture company will hire a rendering team or outsource it for their projects. And more architects started to widely use 3D animation which is in photoreal quality.

According to features and applications, 3D architectural animation can be divided into four types.

Types of 3D Architectural Visualization

  • 3D Walkthroughs

Though it can describe the exterior, the industry usually applies it to the interior. It’s known for the human-eye level view. Just as its name implies, the camera is positioned at more or less eye level. This emphasizes the principal role of the audience and guides them to appreciate the selling points of a property in a virtual tour experience.

  • 3D Flythroughs

It mainly highlights a bird’s eye or aerial view that presents a building and its surroundings from high above. But it can also mix some walkthrough elements together. It enables the audience to observe the relationship between the building and its surroundings with its splendid shots.

  • Exterior and Interior Animation

Often in the form of a brief display, it features the projects from the outside and inside separately, aiming to showcase them from winning angles in full splendor.

  • Mixed Animation

In the most comprehensive manner, it successfully interweaves interior and exterior views. As well, it takes their transitions into account to achieve a strong sense of integrity.

What Advantages Does it Have?

To make the most of 3D architectural animation, we must have a clear idea of its benefits in this industry.

  • Dramatic Visual Impact

In order to conquer the market, it’s vital for architects to display their projects in the most attractive way as much as possible. 3D animation is definitely the best choice. Shot at the flattering angles, with suitable background music and voiceover, using slick editing, it’s as powerful as a professionally-shot film. In such a realistic way, the clients automatically understand the ideas behind the building and have a lasting impression.

  • Wonderful Immersive Experience

Besides, 3D animation can realize the immersion level of full-dive VR, which increases the visual appeal. By watching the 3D movie, the audience are guided to take a future tour. They will get a clear image of the room’s dimensions (e.g., height, depth, and design) based on the high-quality images.

  • Perfect Presentation Integrity

Rather than adopting individual scenes, 3D animation presents the architectural design of both exterior and interior cooperatively. This allows them to enjoy the harmonious interplay between the interior and exterior.

  • Flexible Environment Adjustment

In comparison to photographing, it’s convenient to alter the visualization of the environment. Architects and designers flexibly change things like the lighting, the floor tiles and the textures. For example, we can see the building in in different seasons or times of the day through time-lapse photography.

Who Can Benefit From it and How?

With amazing things around 3D animation, in addition to architects, people relevant to architecture can benefit from it. To sum up, it assists people to promote marketing and realize a perfect product presentation.

No matter how much real estate developers describe the unfinished projects, it can be hard for some potential clients to believe. 3D animation helps to smooth away this problem. It’s the ultimate tool for project promotion in the property business. We can see its usage in different advertising platforms like shopping complexes, social media, TV and sales offices. Nothing can resonate with everyone as powerfully as a digital video.

Exterior and interior designers enjoy 3D architectural animation alike. They are able to get much crucial information from depth to height based on the exact computed video. Thus, they can minimize any mistakes so as to avoid remodeling or correction. This characteristic is also the opportunity of showcasing the ingenuity of their works.

3D animation has got into every comer of our lives. Animation and architecture are combined to infuse new life and energy into the industry. We hope this blog inspired you in some way. Announcement: Micro Settlement-Light Construction | Center on people, design for city

To put the notion of “people-centered development” into effect, Nanjing Municipal Bureau of Planning and Natural Resources has organized a series of competitions themed “Center on People, Design for Cities” since 2018. Focusing on public facilities in urban space, the serial competitions publicly solicit design proposals to create fine public spaces and thus improve the functional quality of cities. Six widely influential events have been held so far, including the Competition for Blood Donation Facilities in Key Areas of Nanjing, the Competition for Nanjing Metro Station Entrance and Exit, the Competition for Micro Stations in Jiangsu Horticultural Expo Garden, the Maigaoqiao Street Covered Bridge Design Competition, the Competition for Landscape Facilities in Nanjing Green Expo Garden, and the “Viewing Pavilion · Micro Building” Design Competition for the Vertical Environment-Community Units in Nanjing. The seventh competition carries on the efforts on small and micro-renewal of urban gaps and space so as to improve people’s livelihood and give expression to local culture.

Theme

Under the theme of Micro Settlement-Light Construction,in response to people’s needs for suburban or countryside experience in the post-COVID era, this competition spurs reflections on the outdoor leisure lifestyle – for instance, the emerging trend of camping – which is gaining popularity among China. Participants are encouraged to renew their understanding of contemporary urban space and life and design it with the strategy of landscape urbanism and the notion of “environment-community unit”. It is hoped that our efforts can crystalize into a demonstrative site for post-COVID new lifestyles in Nanjing’s public urban landscape, which are also conducive to economic growth.

This competition is open to participants at home and abroad, and the winning proposal will be implemented. Hopefully, through consultation, joint contribution and sharing, this event can offer an example of small and micro-renewal of post-COVID public urban landscape, facilitate urban renovation and ecological remediation, and thus enhance the gratification and contentment of citizens.

Members of the Academic Steering Committee for this competition include: Prof. Per Olaf Fjeld, Professor Emeritus and former President of the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO), Prof. Christian Kerez at ETH Zurich, Prof. Yoshiharu Tsukamoto at Tokyo Institute of Technology and lead architect of Atelier Bow-Wow, Prof. Jesús Ulargui Agurruza at U.P.M E.T.S.A.M., Prof. Wang Weijen at Department of Architecture, Hong Kong University and lead architect of Wang Weijen Architecture, Prof. Zhuang Shen at Shanghai Jiaotong University, lead architect of Atelier Archmixing, and Prof. Ge Ming at Southeast University. international-architectural-design-competition-in-china-3d-rendering-archviz-aimir

a. Micro-Settlement, Light Construction

Micro-settlement = a set of structures + a camping site.

Design Objective: Provide services and sites for rest, camping, and other activities in the park by means of “micro-settlement”.

Design a set of light-constructed structures, including more than three single buildings or units.

Design a public place and come up with a suitable theme for public activities. Meanwhile, provide support for camping activities, and arrange at least 30 sites for tent put-up (No need to design the tents, but instead, provide flat, small sites of appropriate size to accommodate the tents.).

Site plan drawing requirements: You need to formulate an overall planning of the “micro-settlement” and draw the site plan accordingly.

Construction requirements: Consider the cost and adopt the method of light construction to shorten the construction time and reduce impacts on the site. The existing trees shall not be cut down; avoid excessive influence on the current environment.

The settlements should be orderly, lively, and concerted with each other. Functionally, the settlements should offer an ascending place, maintain a good relationship with the surroundings, and highlight characteristics. It is preferable that a prototype, which is suitable for popularization, can be extracted out of the settlements as designed.

b. Architectural requirements

Function: First of all, satisfy basic service functions such as equipment rental, sales, medical treatment, lookout, etc. Contestants can devise other functions, if any, such as tent put-up, morning yoga, open-air cinema, concerts, etc. The structures should provide both indoor space and some semi-outdoor space.

International Solicitation for Concept Designs for Wuhan East Lake Science City Innovation Industrial Park in Optics Valley

International Solicitation for Concept Designs for Wuhan East Lake Science City Innovation Industrial Park in Optics Valley

Project Background

Wuhan East Lake High-Tech Development Zone (also known as “East Lake High-Tech Zone” and “Optics Valley of China (OVC)”), was founded in 1988 and successively approved by the state as one of the first National High-Tech Zones, second National Innovation Demonstration Zone and China (Hubei) Pilot Free Trade Zone – Wuhan Area, and has been recognized as a National Optoelectronic Information Industry Base, National Bio-industry Base and Talent Base for Central State-owned Enterprises (SOEs), as well as being included in the first batch of National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Demonstration Bases.

Optics Valley Central City is under accelerated development and construction into a core carrier of urban functions for East Lake High-tech Zone. Different from its north core zone, its south core zone is planned to occupy an area of 3.24 km2, becoming an international community serving the development of innovation and entrepreneurship, sports and leisure, and culture and entertainment. The overall urban layout of the south core zone is a continuation of the urban layout of Optics Valley Central City, namely “small blocks and a dense road network” with a clear spatial sequence and axis. It will be developed into a continuous, multi-level, spatially varied green and open community based on existing hills and rivers connecting with major public buildings in the Zone, and organically integrating with a bus + slow traffic complex 3D traffic system, thereby providing a good development framework for urban invigoration, innovation convergence and future city cultivation.

The construction of East Lake Science City Innovation Industrial Park is now planned so as to further tap the potential of regional development and create an open, diversified and dynamic system that serves business, commerce and innovative industries.

Project Overview

The East Lake Science City Innovation Industrial Park Project is planned to be located in the south core zone of Optics Valley Central City at the intersection of two main roads, Guanggu 5th Road and Gaoxin 4th Road, adjacent to the complex of sports parks and stadiums in the north and the lotus pond park and Central Ecological Corridor in the west, making it the most important node in the urban axis and vibrant green ring, and a landmark in the Zone’s skyline. Metro Line 19 and Line 29 transfer hubs are planned to be constructed in the southeast of the base to facilitate convenient public transportation access.

The project is oriented as an international-level complex serving innovative industries and integrating business, office and culture. It is highly forward-looking and innovative in its multi-functional complex design and integration of shared space, and will reach the mainstream level of international intelligent office property in an all-round way.

The project will consist of two plots in south and north respectively, with a planned total area of 3.4 hectares, designed to become an urban complex including two super high-rise tower buildings (no higher than 150 m and 240 m in height respectively). The building area capacity of the project will not exceed 183,300 m2, with no more than 21,000 m2 for underground commercial space and parking lots. RMB 1,588 million is planned to be invested in the project.

Design Requirements

  1. Full consideration of base characteristics and advantages, and introduction of urban design thinking

The relationships among development intensity, spatial organization and environmental quality are studied to ensure harmonious coordination between the urban complexes of various architectural volumes, and between the urban complexes and surrounding buildings and environment. The different functions and proportions of the project are reasonably allocated to avoid mutual interference between the pedestrian flow and traffic stream in business, hotel and office areas, and maximize the economic value of both the land and commercial operation. Dynamic and open blocks will be created, the design of the interfaces between streets, commercial spaces and pedestrian spaces will be strengthened, and a continuous public pedestrian street system will be built. Outdoor public spaces will be opened in an appropriate manner and unobstructed multi-dimensional city vision from the ground floor, near-ground floor, middle of high-rise tower and roof will be created, demonstrating cultural characteristics and shared resources.

  1. Reasonable functional zoning to create humanized and flexible office space

On the basis of an understanding of new economic forms and social willingness, a future-oriented, people-oriented and high-quality office space will be created and adapted to the flexible needs of enterprises for space utilization and irregular function transformation, thereby realizing personalized development and free combination. Low-energy and sustainable green ecological technology will be combined in order to adjust the microclimate and create a healthy and pleasant space for work and communication. The study of problems in existing office models and the development of high-rise offices will be encouraged, and innovative ideas and technological breakthroughs in design will be presented.

  1. Overall consideration of balance among design innovation, implementation and later operation

Appropriate technical solutions will be selected, balance will be struck among structural form, architectural form, use function and space experience, and excessively complex and difficult construction forms that lead to out-of-control project progress and costs will be avoided.

  1. Land Planning and Design Conditions

See the design specifications for details.

  1. Design Contents

Main contents: project planning (market analysis, product orientation and portfolio, development strategy and later operation strategy suggestions) and main and supporting function designs (office buildings, hotels, businesses, parking garages and equipment rooms).
