In architectural design competitions, it is vital for an architect to demonstrate the vision in a realistic and immersive way. Thus, leveraging 3D architectural rendering services for design competitions enhances the presentation, communication, and overall impact of architectural proposals, increasing the likelihood of success in the competition. In 2019, we had the privilege of collaborating with Zaha Hadid Architects, to bring their vision of a cutting-edge office space to life through a captivating interior rendering. The project is an Office Tower Complex in Shanghai, China with retail in the podium. And the objective was to create a visually striking and functional workspace that reflected ZHA’s identity. At last, we helped our client get shortlisted and here are the final renders. Enjoy!
Office Interior Rendering for Architectural Design Competition
Understand the Project
As an urgent project, the client requested 6 interior office views in 9 days. Although rough Rhino models were provided, there were still plenty of work to be done. ZHA’s designs often incorporate fluid shapes and complex spatial designs. While the workload might be increased due to their intricate designs, we still viewed these challenges as opportunities for innovation and creativity.
- The views
There are 6 views according to the request, and are about the lobby, retail area, internal bridge, meeting room, and workstation. ZHA were confident with the views they’re looking for. In case of they weren’t, our professional 3D artists would give suggestions on camera angles which would best showcase their design.
- 3D models
To support our fast production, ZHA prepared the Rhino models for these interior spaces. Although there’re still some work to be done, it saved us from building the model from the ground up.
- Furniture plans
The architect also shared the furniture and planter plans, which helped our artists understand the whole picture. At the same time, we received the Rhino models of some furniture and plants. This saved us a lot of time.
- Material references
We’ve received the material references for the designs. These futuristic designs employ cutting-edge materials to achieve unique and visually striking interior elements.
With all files and data set up, our 3D rendering team started the production immediately.
3D Model Drafts
The first round is to confirm the 3D models and camera angles. As a trusted architectural rendering company, we’re taken care of hundreds of projects each year, and each of them are unique. For urgent projects like this, we coordinate the whole 3D team so that our 3D modelers work together to get the model drafts as quick as possible.
As ZHA shared Rhino models, the first step was to convert the file by inputting into 3ds Max.
This was followed by checking the scale in 3ds Max. After soothing the lines and geometry, 3D modeler output the views requested by the architects.
When we sent the model drafts to the ZHA team, they actually were thinking of changing designs. This happens before and during the production, and our team coped with it by incorporating the updated design parts into the existing and refined models. So, a friendly reminder here, if you’re modifying any designs when the 3D model is fine-tuned, please update the modification parts only.
After updating the modified parts (mostly minor such as the mullions and stairs), the models and camera angles were confirmed. Now, it’s time for the lighting.
In this stage, our 3D artists set the lighting for the scenes. Usually it includes natural light and artificial lighting. When it comes to interior spaces, the natural light is set to enhance the overall believability of the scene. It is where the shadows by the windows from. Meanwhile, the artificial lighting simulates real-world lighting conditions. As a result, the lighting drafts were shared for the architects to confirm the lighting ambiance.
Material and Rendering Drafts
Utilizing state-of-the-art rendering techniques to bring the design to life is the whole point in this stage. This included attention to lighting, textures, and realistic detailing, resulting in renderings that not only but exceeded our clients’ expectation.
Client’s Comments and Final Delivery
Once the rendering drafts was confirmed, all left was some minor adjustment. The architects pointed out some aspects they hoped to modify, and our 3D artists used Adobe Photoshop to adjust them one by one. Consequently, all 6 renders were ready for final delivery in 9 days in extreme realistic manner.
Some of the draft comments from the architects:
Collaboration was key to a project’s success. Our multidisciplinary team worked cohesively, with architects, designers, and rendering specialists seamlessly integrating their expertise. Regular communication with the ZHA team ensured that their feedback was incorporated throughout the design and rendering process. These factors are the key to an on-time delivery for such an urgent project. The final office interior rendering stands as a testament to the dedication and skill of our team. The images showcase the transformed space, highlighting key design elements and the seamless integration of our rendering techniques. The project was not just about visuals; it was about creating an immersive experience that resonates with the client’s vision.
Actually, this is not the first collaboration between Zaha Hadid Architects and AIMIR CG. The ZHA team has become our valued partner since 2016 in the Morpheus Hotel project. Since then, we’ve worked together to achieve ZHA’s vision with our realistic renders, animations, and virtual tours. Here are some of the case studies of ZHA’s projects:
The collaboration continues, please stay tuned with AIMIR CG and we’ll keep updating the latest architectural rendering projects with the ZHA team.
