What is Dragon Boat Festival?
The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Duanwu Festival , is one of China’s four major traditional festivals, with a history spanning more than 2,000 years.
Celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, the festival commemorates Qu Yuan, a renowned poet and statesman of ancient China who is remembered for his patriotism, integrity, and devotion to his country.
Over the centuries, the festival has evolved into a celebration of cultural heritage, family unity, health, and well-being. Today, people celebrate not only to honor history but also to share wishes for good health, safety, and prosperity.
Traditional Festival Activity and Food:
-Dragon Boat Racing

Dragon boat racing is the most iconic and exciting activity of the festival. Teams of paddlers race long, elaborately decorated dragon boats across rivers and lakes, synchronizing their strokes to the rhythm of beating drums.
The competition showcases teamwork, determination, and perseverance while creating a vibrant festive atmosphere that attracts participants and spectators alike.
-Zongzi
No Dragon Boat Festival celebration is complete without Zongzi, traditional sticky rice dumplings wrapped in fragrant bamboo leaves.
Families gather to prepare and enjoy Zongzi with a variety of fillings:
- Sweet Zongzi – Filled with red bean paste, red dates, or lotus seed paste, offering a soft and naturally sweet flavor.
- Salty Zongzi – Filled with marinated pork, salted egg yolk, mushrooms, and other flavorful ingredients, creating a rich and satisfying taste.
The distinctive aroma of bamboo leaves has become one of the most memorable flavors of early summer in China.
