2. Theme: Commerce Shapes Life

If we want to figure out what changes are going on in the world of commercial space and how they are affecting people’s lives, we must start by understanding those factors that have completely changed our lifestyles. With the development of the Internet, the personal life and social interactions of modern society have been increasingly fulfilled in digital virtual spaces. However, it was hard to imagine ten years ago.

Nowadays, we are in a world of dramatic changes where the most deep-rooted customs could be also transformed in a short time. Almost all the originally clear boundaries have been blurred, overlapped and interlaced, whether it is the division of physical space or labor in society. Only continuous innovation and reform can help us see the feasible future directions.

In such an environment, as a carrier of commercial practices, the development of commercial space also faces the unprecedented opportunities and challenges. As the leader of lifestyle, it is not only the city life in miniature but also the bearing of residents’ memories, expressing and guiding the aesthetics and appeals of this era. How to use creative methods to break through the constraints of traditional space, integrate the “customs” and “attitudes” that have no intersection at all, and create a bran-new experience field has become a basic problem that needs to be faced and solved by all practitioners.

Will the commercial space become a retail theater in future? Will the commercial plaza become a big art installation or a pleasure ground? Will the future business experience change or even redefine the definition and perception of living? …

Facing lots of imaginations and expectations towards the future commercial space, the new International Shopping Plaza Concept Competition will continue focusing on “Commerce Shapes Life”. By discussing the innovation and reform of commercial space in the era of “experience economy”, it makes efforts to involve more designers in the design of new commercial space. As well, it expects that worldwide designers can use strict and specific design to explore the organic combination of three main elements in business “people, goods and fields”, and reshape the infinite possibilities of ecological relations between “space, format, and operation” in future business.
