Liberty Station is a large commercial development situated on the premises of a former naval training center in San Diego, CA. As the home to stylish foodies, artisans, and makers, the site offers residents and visitors more than good food and drinks. Now, the community is welcoming a new boutique hotel called “The Barracks”. The hotel project was launched in 2017, and the updated design is finished in 2023. This time, we helped the architects unveil the breathtaking beauty of this future hotel’s façade and inner space with photorealistic 3D renderings.

OBR the architect is our old friend who is in charge of this hotel. They were looking for hotel 3D renders to assist with the project. In this case study, we’ll start with the project introduction, following with the detailed hotel 3D rendering process, and end with the final delivery.

The Barracks Hotel

In the 2017 plan, there will be a pool and some new buildings. However, the updated plan says this is an adaptive reuse of existing historic buildings. The future hotel will be 77,156 square feet with hotel rooms, courtyards, lobby, staff spaces, and mechanical and storage.

The sustainable architecture will embrace the old structure while redoing some minor adjustments on the façade. However, the interior is ready to be a boutique hotel. The American Country style guest rooms use traditional materials to create inviting and cozy spaces. In all, the proposed boutique hotel aims to honor its past while embracing contemporary comfort. Furthermore, it creates a space that resonates with history buffs and modern travelers alike.

The Scope of the Project

The scope of the Barracks is very clear. As the architect provided adequate information and files for launching the project, we understand they needed four views which are:

  • Exterior view from the corner looking at the building;
  • Exterior view from the landscaped courtyard past the trees towards the hotel room’s outdoor patios;
  • Interior view looking across the lobby towards the lobby/lounge area;
  • Interior view from the interior of the hotel room near the bathroom looking past the bedroom out the windows past the outdoor patio towards the landscaped courtyard.

While the descriptions of the views needed were as clear as enough, the designer still shared design plans indicating the camera angles of each views.

Beyond Blueprints: 3D Exterior Rendering Process

When CAD plans and references provide a solid foundation, our 3D artists started to breathe life into the vision. To start, we needed to transform the 2D CADs into 3D models.

– Architectural 3D Modeling

The first step involved meticulous architectural modeling. Armed with a comprehensive understanding of the site and a clear design concept, our artists initiated the detailed 3D modeling process. Every brick, every window, every intricate detail of the Art Deco façade was meticulously recreated in the digital realm. This ensured historical accuracy while allowing for precise integration of modern elements. The naval training center’s original architectural elements were retained and enhanced with Art Deco motifs. Intricate details such as geometric patterns, bold colors, and luxurious materials were integrated into the 3D model to capture the essence of the Art Deco era.

– Material Selection and Lighting Simulation

A crucial aspect of any 3D rendering project is the selection and simulation of materials and lighting. In the case of our boutique hotel, the materials chosen needed to reflect the glamour associated with Art Deco. In particular, the style should follow the reference images provided by the architect.

Lighting played a pivotal role in accentuating the structure features. It needed magic hands to strategically place the lighting, so that it would bring out the details in the 3D scenes. Because both exterior renders used daytime and clear sky, the 3D specialists adjusted the light and shadow to create consistency.

– Rendering and Post-production

The last stage involves rendering the scene and post-produce the details. This can be a time-consuming process, depending on the complexity of the scene and the desired level of detail. After rendering, the 3D artists added some people to make the scene more immersive. We believe it is a good choice to add some people and activities in the scene of this hotel. However, if you’re hesitating whether to use people in your 3D visuals, you’re welcome to read our suggestions here.

While the exterior views were taken care of, our interior rendering team were working on the two interior views: the lobby and the guest room.

Beyond Blueprints: 3D Interior Rendering Process

The first step of our 3D interior rendering process was a through floor plan analysis. This time, our interior CG team created the 3D models from scratch.

– Interior 3D Modeling & Furnishing

The CAD plans demonstrate clearly how the inner spaces look like. After studying them, we built 3D models of the lobby and guest room with 3ds Max. The 3D modelers paid great attention to the details, especially the décors. Since there was not a specific furniture plan, our interior 3D modelers arranged the spaces with their own understanding of the design. As a result, the designer hoped to add more art in the lobby and open the door of the guest room to show the patio. We would show the updated in the next round of drafts.

– Texturing and Lighting

Because the lobby featured an elegant and modern style and the guest room is American Country, different materials and moods were used. For example, the CG specialists picked light and warm colors for the lobby, but dark and cozy colors for the room. In the guest room view, you can see the courtyard details through the patio. This was because our 3D artists made the view visible in order to fit our client’s needs.

– Rendering and Post-production

Similar with the exterior views, what the 3D artists did was rendering and adjusting the scene. The 3D renders underwent a comprehensive post-production phase. During the phase, additional enhancements were applied for realism. Color correction, contrast adjustments, and fine-tuning of details were carried out to elevate the visual appeal. In this case, it was the furniture details and materials where we put most of the efforts on. It is not always necessary to do post-production.

Final Delivery of Hotel Exterior & Interior Visualizations

At last, the four 3D hotel renders are delivered as the following:

The revitalization of this historic building is more than just a construction project; it’s a testament to the power of imagination and technology. The 3D renders served as a bridge between the past and the future, allowing stakeholders to envision and create a space that honors history while catering to modern sensibilities. As the rendering partner, we cannot wait to see the beginning of the construction.

Conclusion

The Barracks Hotel is a good example to show AIMIR CG’s working process in architectural visualization projects. Besides, the credit of course goes to our client, who collaborated with regular feedback and communication. As a professional 3D architectural rendering studio, we’re proud to see sustainability and reuse in architecture design. Moreover, we’re proud to be part of the journey in delivering the project. Our advanced 3D rendering and post-production processes have breathed life into this vision, allowing us to reimagine the past while embracing the future of architectural design.
